Canada, September 18: The Monthi Fest, or the Nativity of Our Lady, holds deep sentimental significance for the Konkani Catholic community in Canada, evoking cherished memories of cultural and religious traditions. A cherished pillar of Konkan heritage, Monthi Fest marks both the harvest season and the Nativity of Mother Mary. This year, the Mangalorean Association of Canada (MAC) honored the occasion with deep reverence and grand celebration at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Mississauga on September 8, 2024.
The event began with a warm welcome from Gerry D’Mello, one of MAC’s most dedicated supporters, who briefly outlined the day’s religious proceedings. Little children carrying trays of vibrant flowers processed into the hall, joyfully offering their floral tributes to Mother Mary while the choir led the congregation in singing the traditional hymns “Sokkod Sangatha Mellyam” and “Moriyek Hogolsiyan.”
Following the veneration, the faithful proceeded to celebrate a solemn Konkani Mass. The liturgy was presided over by Fr. Andrew Lewis, who was also marking his Sacerdotal Golden Jubilee. Fr. Roshan D’Souza delivered a heartfelt homily that resonated deeply with the congregation. Co-celebrants included Fr. Ranjan D’Sa, Fr. Rajesh D’Souza, Fr. Wilson Andrade, Fr. Godwin Pinto, Fr. Rudolph D’Souza, and Deacon Sarfraz Pinto. The Bethany Sister, Sr. Ferdinanda, another devoted supporter, was also present to witness the festivities. The Eucharistic celebration was further enhanced by the harmonious choir, expertly directed by the talented Merlyn Rodrigues, whose melodies filled the church with spiritual fervor. The Mass concluded with a vote of thanks, extending appreciation to the clergy, attendees, and sponsors. Blessed candles were distributed to Mass Muddhoms and sponsors, marking the sacred conclusion of the religious proceedings.
The celebrations then transitioned to the cultural program at Pope John Paul II Hall, beginning with refreshments and a welcome from Everest Vijay Dante, MAC’s dynamic president. In his address, he reflected on the significance of Monthi Fest and highlighted MAC’s achievements, thanking those who had supported the association through both good and challenging times. He expressed gratitude to the clergy, sponsors, volunteers, and performers for their invaluable contributions, before introducing the day’s emcees—Carol Pinto and Nicole Lewis—who would guide the cultural segment.
The program opened with a dance performed by children, symbolizing the rosary devotion and the community’s gratitude to Mother Mary. Dressed in strikingly authentic costumes, the performers transported the audience to the heart of India with their vibrant dance routines. The choreography, led by Jasmine Monteiro, Vaishavi Sathyamoorthi, and Carol Lobo, along with assistance from Diana D’Mello and Karina D’Mello, was mesmerizing, showcasing the beauty of tradition with meticulous attention to detail in costumes, makeup, and styling.
The musical performances further enriched the evening, with singers such as Lara Rebello and the Pinto Brothers—Lloyd, Linton, and Larsen—alongside Odette Sequeira, captivating the audience with a mix of Konkani, English, and Hindi songs. Dance groups like Bombaikars, Team Cousins, and Konkan Nekhetran dazzled attendees with their energetic performances, receiving enthusiastic support from the crowd.
A special moment in the celebration was the honoring of Maxim D’Mello, a former MAC president and a longtime member of the management committee. Having dedicated over two decades to serving the Mangalorean community in Canada, Maxim has been a driving force behind MAC’s growth and evolution. In recognition of his contributions, MAC President Everest Vijay Dante led a heartfelt ceremony, presenting Maxim with an award. Fr. Andrew Lewis, in celebration of his Golden Jubilee, was also honored with a silk shawl and a gift from MAC’s spiritual advisor, Fr. Roshan Loy D’Souza.
Acknowledging the generosity of sponsors, MAC called them to the stage to express gratitude for their support, which plays a crucial role in making such events possible. MAC also celebrated the achievements of its youth by awarding scholarships to the winners of its annual program. Royston Rego and Chris D’Souza received the 1st and 2nd Year 1 awards, while Ethan D’Souza and Waylon Mathias shared the Year 2 award. MAC expressed pride in all applicants, wishing them success in their educational endeavors.
Fr. Rudolph D’Souza blessed the newly harvested corn, or “Noven,” continuing a beloved tradition upheld by Catholics worldwide. The blessing was followed by a sumptuous vegetarian dinner featuring traditional dishes such as pothrade, bimbli saar, saango, and vorn, catered with love by Loy D’Souza of Konkan Delite.
The festivities concluded with a 50/50 raffle draw, with half of the proceeds dedicated to Snehalaya, an organization in Mangalore that serves the marginalized. The day’s joyful celebration ended with the singing of “Laudate,” marking the close of a memorable and spiritually enriching Monthi Fest.
MAC extended its sincere appreciation to all volunteers, particularly Samson Soans for his dedication to music, audiovisual support, and the event’s smooth execution. Special thanks also went to Aaron Fernandes, who captured the event’s unforgettable moments, and to the entire team whose hard work made the Monthi Fest a resounding success.
