The Mangalorean Konkan Christian Association (MKCA)

Illinois, USA: The Mangalorean Konkan Christian Association (MKCA) marked its 23rd Annual Monthi Festh on September 6 at St. Hubert’s Church Hall in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Unique to the Mangalorean community, Monthi Festh is akin to a thanksgiving celebration—it’s a time to express gratitude for the new crop of the season, similar to festivals like Onam in Kerala, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Nag Panchami, Teej, Rath Yatra, and the Hornbill Festival in different parts of India.

Mangaloreans observe this special occasion to celebrate the birth of the Virgin Mary and give thanks to her for the gift of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world, as well as the new harvest. A key part of the observance involves blessing the new crop, which is then distributed to devotees. Families bring these blessed offerings home and gather together to honor Mother Mary’s birthday.

The festivities included a Mass at St. Hubert’s Church, attended by MKCA members and their guests. The cultural celebrations commenced with a heartfelt welcome from MKCA President, Leonard Lobo Shenoy, who greeted all attendees and set an uplifting tone. Associate Pastor Rev. Oswald Nkyanungi then performed a solemn blessing using holy water. This was followed by the traditional flower-offering ceremony, in which all the children joyfully participated. The ceremony concluded with the distribution of Novem—the blessed new grain—to everyone present.

Leonard Lobo Shenoy shared the inspiring history of MKCA, highlighting the pioneering role of Dr. Austin D’Souza Prabhu—founder and original president—in establishing the association, alongside other founding members. He also delved into the origins of the Monthi Festh tradition and how it has been celebrated in India through the ages. Leonard concluded by expressing heartfelt thanks to Parish Priest Rev. Tomy Abraham and Associate Pastor Fr. Oswald Nkyanungi for their generous offer of the venue.

Leonard Lobo Shenoy extended heartfelt gratitude to the organizing committee for their unwavering dedication, crediting their tireless efforts for the event’s seamless success. He also acknowledged the valuable contributions of members and their families in preparing a diverse array of authentic Mangalorean cuisine, and warmly recognized all members and guests who played a role in making the program memorable.

Dr. Austin D’Souza Prabhu delivered a moving eulogy, honoring the memory of two esteemed individuals: veteran Konkani artist Eric Ozario and Appoline Symphrosa Lewis, a valued MKCA member.

As the program reached its heartwarming finale, President Leonard Lobo Shenoy led the group in a heartfelt prayer of grace before the meal. Following this, attendees savored a sumptuous vegetarian dinner, featuring an exquisite array of authentic Mangalorean dishes, lovingly prepared by MKCA volunteers.
