September 7, 2024: On a bright and joyful Saturday, the Mangalorean Catholic community of East Bengaluru gathered to celebrate "Monthi Festh," honoring the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Hosted by the Mudla Konkani Canara Association (MKCK), this year’s event attracted a large crowd, showcasing the community’s deep sense of togetherness, faith, and cultural heritage.
The festivities began with a beautiful flower shower by children, adorning the statue of Baby Mary in a heartfelt gesture symbolizing purity and devotion. Hymns filled the air as the congregation joined in prayer, creating a reverent and thankful atmosphere that captured the essence of this beloved feast, much like the fragrance of blooming coastal jasmine.
The highlight of the celebration was the Holy Mass, led by Rev. Fr. Bonaventure Rodriguez and attended by Rev. Fr. Richard Pais. Fr. Bonaventure's heartfelt homily resonated deeply with the community, emphasizing the values of family, love, and togetherness central to Mangalorean Catholic life.
A key part of the ceremony was the traditional blessing of the new crop, "Noven," symbolizing gratitude for the harvest season and the fruits of labor. The blessed corn was shared among attendees, serving as a poignant reminder of the community’s thankfulness for the year’s blessings.
Following the Mass, a traditional five-course vegetarian feast was served, celebrating the rich culinary traditions of Mangalorean cuisine. The meal concluded with the distribution of sugarcane, evoking nostalgic joy for many and adding a sweet note to the celebration. On this special occasion, Mrs. Helen Fernandes led prayers for the girls of our community, nation, and the world. This gathering included a moment of silent prayer, during which blessings were invoked for every girl child in our families.
To enhance the day’s festivities, cultural programs and games organized by Mr. Ajith Dsouza, Mr. Sanj Lobo, and Ms. Smruthi Dsouza engaged both young and old. Laughter and cheers filled the venue as families participated in friendly competitions, bringing a sense of fun and excitement to the event. Our president, Mr. Richard Sequiera, awarded cash prizes to the winners of housie-housie, while our secretary, Ms. Ayeshia Fernandes, encouraged all members to attend in traditional attire to honor the Monthi Feast.
As the celebration drew to a close, Mr. Amith Dsouza, the treasurer, took a moment to thank the generous donors whose contributions made the event possible, recognizing them by name. The Joint Secretary, Mr. Ajith Dsouza, also expressed his gratitude for the community’s ongoing support of the association’s activities.
