Bengaluru, May 3, 2026: The National Synodal Assembly concluded on a note of pride and
thanksgiving as four distinguished Indian Catholics—Christine Nathan, Olinda Timms, Father
Charles Davis, and Nigel Fernandes—were honoured for their outstanding service to the
universal Church through appointments and recognition from the Holy See.
The honours, conferred during the final business session, celebrated their remarkable
contributions in the fields of integral human development, bioethics, healthcare, Catholic
publishing, and evangelization. Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, Cardinal Anthony Poola, Archbishop
Peter Machado of Bengaluru, Archbishop Vincent Aind of Ranchi, and Father Stephen Alathara,
Deputy Secretary General of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India, presented the
recognitions.
FKCA’s very own Nigel Fernandes received special recognition for being awarded the Papal -->
Knighthood of the Order of St. Sylvester, one of the highest honours bestowed upon laypersons
by the Church. As Chief Executive Officer of ATC Publishers, he has left an enduring mark on
Catholic publishing, catechesis, and digital evangelization. His work has included facilitating
major Catholic Bible translations, supporting official liturgical texts, publishing thousands of
faith formation resources, and co-founding Catholic Connect, a global digital platform serving
Catholics worldwide.
Christine Nathan was honoured for her recent appointment to the Vatican's Dicastery for
Promoting Integral Human Development, a significant affirmation of Indian lay leadership at the
global level. Currently serving as President of the International Catholic Migration Commission,
she has dedicated more than four decades to championing the rights of migrants, labourers,
and marginalized communities. Her journey has taken her from grassroots trade union activism
in India to international advocacy at the International Labour Organization. Nathan said her
appointment reinforces the Church's mission to accompany migrants with compassion, dignity,
and justice.
Olinda Timms was recognised for her appointment as a corresponding academician to the
Pontifical Academy for Life. A leading scholar at St. John's Research Institute, Bengaluru, she
has made significant contributions at the intersection of healthcare, ethics, and social concerns.
Her work has helped deepen the Church's engagement with some of the most pressing
questions surrounding human life and dignity in the modern world.
Father Charles Davis of the Diocese of Jammu-Srinagar was honoured for his reappointment to
the Pontifical Academy for Life for a second term from 2024 to 2029. Serving at St. John's
National Academy of Health Sciences and as a visiting professor in Germany, he is
internationally respected for his expertise in bioethics and moral theology. A recipient of the
prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, Father Davis has contributed extensively
through his teaching, research, and publications on medical ethics, law, and human dignity.
The recognition of these four individuals highlighted the growing contribution of Indian
Catholics—both clergy and laity—to the mission of the universal Church. Their witness reflects
a Church deeply engaged with contemporary challenges, from migration and social justice to
bioethics and evangelization.
As the assembly drew to a close, their achievements stood as a powerful reminder that faithful
service, rooted in the Gospel, can transcend borders and enrich the life and mission of the
Church throughout the world.
Nigel Fernandes has served the Federation of Konkani Catholic Associations (FKCA), Bengaluru,
in various key capacities, including Media Manager, Joint Secretary, and Vice Chairman–2.
During his tenure, he has demonstrated exemplary leadership and commitment to the
community. The Federation extends its heartfelt congratulations and wishes him continued
success in all his future endeavours.
