Konkani Catholic Sangh, Yeshwanthpur at the “Vailankanni of Karnataka”
February 23, 2026
As part of our Lenten spiritual journey, 89 members of the Konkani Catholic Sangh, Yeshwanthpur
embarked on a grace-filled pilgrimage to the revered Basilica of Our Lady of Health — lovingly known
as the “Vailankanni of Karnataka.”
What unfolded was not just a day’s travel, but a deeply enriching spiritual experience marked by
prayer, fellowship, and gratitude.
A Journey Begins in Prayer
Our pilgrimage commenced at 6:10 AM from Yeshwanthpur Railway Station aboard the Janshatabdi
Express. Having all 89 members together in a single bogie created an immediate sense of unity — a
travelling parish filled with joy and anticipation.
The journey began prayerfully with the Angelus and the Rosary, dedicating the day to Our Blessed
Mother. By 8:00 AM, we shared a delightful breakfast of tatte idli and vada with chutney and sambar
— a simple meal that strengthened both body and spirit.
At 10:45 AM, we arrived in Harihar and proceeded toward the Basilica grounds with hearts ready for
worship.
Walking the Path of Faith
Upon arrival, we prayerfully conducted the Way of the Cross in Konkani, reflecting deeply on Christ’s
sacrifice during this sacred Lenten season.
While some members participated in the Kannada Mass, others explored the Basilica premises and
museum. Many spent quiet moments near the grotto of Mother Mary, immersed in silence and
personal prayer, absorbing the serenity that surrounds this holy place.
At 1:00 PM, a special Konkani Mass was celebrated exclusively for our group. The Eucharistic
celebration became the spiritual high point of the day, as we offered prayers for our families, our
community, and our personal intentions.
Following Mass, lunch was arranged in the church hall, where fellowship continued in a spirit of joy
and togetherness.
Discovering a Legacy of Faith
The Basilica of Our Lady of Health carries a remarkable 200-year history rooted in a miraculous
event. Tradition recounts how a Brahmin, nearly drowning in the flooded Tungabhadra River, was
saved by a floating statue of Our Lady. Moved by the miracle, he embraced the Christian faith and
enshrined the statue in his home.
As devotion spread and miracles were attributed to Our Lady’s intercession, a shrine was
established. Over time, it grew into a major Marian pilgrimage centre, drawing thousands of
devotees from all faiths seeking healing and hope.
It is this living history of faith that makes the Basilica a place of profound spiritual significance.
A Joyful Return
By 3:45 PM, we gathered at Harihar Railway Station for our return journey. The atmosphere was
lively and cheerful. Members bonded over a fun game of Tambola, with several delighted winners
taking home small cash prizes.
Coffee and Crackjack biscuits were served at 5:00 PM, adding warmth to the journey. As the evening
approached, we concluded with the Rosary and a thanksgiving prayer at 7:00 PM, offering gratitude
for the blessings received throughout the day.
By 8:45 PM, we safely reached Yeshwanthpur — hearts full, faith renewed, and bonds strengthened.
More Than a Pilgrimage
This Lenten pilgrimage was more than a physical journey to a sacred destination. It was:
* A renewal of Marian devotion
* A strengthening of community bonds
* A reminder of God’s grace in our lives
* A shared spiritual encounter that will remain in our hearts
As one family in Christ, we returned home inspired and spiritually enriched.
A day well spent. A faith deeply touched.
